'The Double' Review on Latin Post!

Here is the review for "The Double" that I wrote on Latin Post.

Civil Rights was a major theme that dominated the cinematic landscape in 2013 with such films as "12 Years a Slave," Fruitvale Station" and "Lee Daniels' The Butler." The one-person genre also emerged throughout the year with such hits as "Gravity" and the critically adored "All Is Lost." While these two themes have continued to develop in 2014, another major cinematic motif has become more prominent this year. That theme is the doppelganger as evidenced in such films as "Face of Love" and "Enemy." Another film that has showcased the subject is the recent "The Double."

Magnolia Films

The film portrays the life of Simon James (Jesse Eisenberg), a simple and lonely young man who works in a government building, has to tend to a dying mother and is seemingly in love with the equally lonely Hannah (Mia Wasikowska). Life is at its all-time worst for poor Simon who seems incapable of expressing his feelings or asserting himself in the public eye. However, it only gets worse when James Simon, a man who looks exactly like Simon, emerges and starts to take over his life. Simon is then faced with the dilemma of fighting back for his life and making sure that he does not become a complete nonentity.

New Name: From a Salazar POV

Hi everyone, 

Apologies for the instability of this blog for the last few months. We are going through a transitional phase with our film and are trying to create the most stable platform possible to promote it. We are creating a new blog for La Cuarta Productions and this one will return to being a hub about movie news or festival news. Look out for our continued Oscar coverage.

Who are David & Francisco Salazar?

Many of you know us, but we suspect that there are some that know very little about us. 

David (myself) and Francisco are the two directors of "The Next Page." We previously directed  a number of short films, including “Messenger” and “Conciliation.” Both films were selected into various film festivals including the Long Island International Film Expo, the Sunscreen Film Festival, and Big Apple Film Festival. 

We also worked as producers for a number of shorts, including “Last Game” which was selected at the Asians On Film Festival and International Festival of Manhattan. We also recently produced the short film “Late Text” which is also currently on the festival circuit. 

Aside from work as directors and producers, we have been involved with a number of other major projects. 

Francisco also worked extensively as an Assistant Director and most recently he worked the upcoming feature film “Spell” starring Novella Nelson (“The Devil’s Advocate” 1997) and produced by Patrick Cunningham (“Martha Marcy May Marlene,” 2011).

Francisco also worked with distribution for FilmBuff & Independent Film Project. 

I worked as a  Production Manager on the upcoming feature film “Spell” and as a Camera Assistant for many commercials and short films.

Fun Facts

-We also work as reporters for Latin Post and cover a wide range of topics regarding film and opera. We have both interviewed a number of major actors and directors including Ryan Gosling, Benedict Cumberbatch, Guillermo del Toro, Will Poulter, John Leguizamo & Jonas Cuaron & Rodrigo Santoro. 

-Both of us are musicians. I play the violin and Francisco plays the cello. 

-We both love the opera and can often be found at the Metropolitan Opera in NY. 

Favorite Films?

David: It changes all the time. But among the really important films for me are Pedro Almodovar's "Talk to Her," Hitchcock's "Rear Window," The original Star Wars trilogy, Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon," "Casablanca." I can also watch "The Tree of Life" again and again and never get sick of it. 

Francisco: There are many films that I love and it usually changes and every day. Among my favorites are Anthony Minghella's "The English Patient," Alfred Hitchcock's "Notorious" and "Shadow of a Doubt," "Casablanca," Joe Wright's "Atonement." But it was the Star Wars saga that basically inspired me to be a Filmmaker.      

Favorite Directors?

D: Alfred Hitchcock, Pedro Almodovar, Stanley Kubrick, Paul Thomas Anderson, Ingmar Bergman, Joel and Ethan Coen, John Huston, Billy Wilder, David Lean. The list could really go on and on, but these are the filmmakers I turn back to time and again. 

F: There are so many great filmmakers but are the great masters that have really inspired throughout. Hitchcock (Everyone of his films is amazing), Almodovar (I love his later works), Paul Thomas Anderson ("The Master," "Boogie Nights" and "There Will Be Blood) Are Among favorite Films), Billy Wilder ("Ace in a Hole" and "Sunset Boulevard" especially), The Coen Brothers ("No Country for Old Men," "A Serious Man," and "Inside Llewyn Davis" are among my favorites, Steve McQueen (He has only made three films and I can't wait for whats coming next), Martin Scorsese (Everyone of his films is special), and Terrence Malick (There is no one like him and "The Tree of Life" is a masterpiece) 

Hobbies:

D: Learning Languages (I speak Spanish, French, English and am working on German), violin, reading (any classic literature or book on film or music), writing, soccer (Real Madrid fan), hockey (NY Islanders fan), classical music, opera

F:  Reading (Give me any classic literature, a book about film or any modern classic and I'll read it), playing Cello, Soccer (I only watch the World Cup or a major world tournament), Cooking (I love trying out new dishes and baking bread), Decorating ( I usually like to decorate for Christmas), Listening to Music ( I love Classical Music and generally pass the time finding new artists or recordings on Youtube).
