The Artist wins Best Picture

The Artist won Best Picture tonight at the Oscars. But the big surprise wasn't the Best Picture. Hugo dominated the first half of the show winning five awards shutting out favorites such as The Tree of Life for Cinematography and Rise of the Planet of the Apes for Visual Effects.

Both films took home five awards.

Below we have who guessed correctly with our predictions linked here.

La Guerre est Declare Review

Based on a true story, "La Guerre est Declaree" ("Declaration of War") presents the story of two young parents who must come to terms with the fact that their infant has a brain tumor. Despite the tragic and exposed nature of the material, Director Valerie Donzelli has no quams about presenting her own story (she acts in the film as well) with a lightness and joviality of a fairy tale that while never undercutting the tragedy, certainly makes for a more uplifting journey.

Valerie Donzelli plays Juliet alongside true life husband (also screenwriter of the film) Jeremie Elkaim as... Romeo (the film makes an explicit joke about this early on). The two meet and become instantly drawn to each other. They quickly elope and soon thereafter find themselves as young parents of Adam who seems to be abnormal. The problems slowly creep up on them and the viewer and create an anxiety as one ponders what could be wrong with Adam. Finally, Juliet finds out that her son has a brain tumor and the rest of the film is devoted to Romeo and Juliet's attempts to save their son.

The Artist wins the BAFTA

The Artist is now  sure bet Best Picture winner at the  Oscars. Jean Dujardin has clinched the Best Actor award also as well as Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer. The actress award is still a bit up in air although you can definitely say that Meryl Streep is now ahead of Viola Davis. The Artist won seven awards at the BAFTAs tonight including Best Film while Hugo won 2 and Senna won 2. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won Best British Film and The Skin I Live In surprised as it beat out Oscar favorite A Separation.

BAFTA predictions

Today are the BAFTA awards, a precursor that is a good indicator as to where the OSCARs will sway especially in the acting awards. My predictions are the ones highlighted in green. In addition below I will also predict who can surprise as this awards ceremony can sometimes throw curve balls.

BEST FILM
THE ARTIST Thomas Langmann-Predicted winner
THE DESCENDANTS Jim Burke, Alexander Payne, Jim Taylor
DRIVE Marc Platt, Adam Siegel
THE HELP Brunson Green, Chris Columbus, Michael Barnathan
TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Robyn Slovo
The alternative surprise could easily be Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy because it is the British film and because it is the second most nominated film of the five.

RIP Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston was found dead yesterday at the age of 48.  Her powerful and expressive voice will always be remembered.

Portman joins Christian Bale, Isabel Lucas and Cate Blanchett in Knight of the Cups and Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett and Haley Bennett for Lawless.
